How can I stay in Denmark for more than 3 months

How can I stay in Denmark for more than 3 months?
I'm from the states and I'm trying to live in Coppenhagen, Denmark for at least a year. I'm trying to avoid student visas (have to pay for school), and real work seems nearly impossible to come by. Any idea on how to stay longer than the 3 month "schengan" visa? Any programs that don't cost much or easy ways to find jobs? Thanks!

Tourists are welcomed in Denmark if they follow the law and stay as they may. Illegal immigrants who try to work under the table and do not contribute to the society by paying taxes and duties are not!..

Yes, you need a work visa. A permanent resident does not have the same freedom to jump between the EU countries as a citizen does. If you waited until you qualify for Swedish citizenship, you would be able to work in all of the EU without a permit.
