you can avoid paying import taxes by purchasing the car in a foreign country and then shipping it in yourself. i don't know all the details of this. i've only read about it. but evidently it's a common practice. basically you fly to a foreign country, purchase the car and ship it back on your own dime. several companies do this including volvo and bmw.

heh...Danes have been trying to do this for years, so no, the system is pretty much flawless, as the government repairs any flaws as soon as they are discovered. It is almost impossible to get around the high car prices. We moved to Denmark last year and spent a long time trying to figure out if there was a way to get around the car taxes/prices. Even asked a consultancy company. All the solutions we found were temporary or they would not allow for us to drive the car on a regular basis. We ended up selling our cars in Switzerland and down-grading when we bought a car in Denmark. We had friends who tried to find loop-holes as well when moving to Norway, which have similar car prices and taxation systems, but they too had to bite the bullet and buy a high priced car in Norway. You can read more here: http://www.skat.dk/SKAT.aspx?oID=213873&vID=0 If you scroll down there are some articles on cars, which you might find interesting. If you read Danish, you can go to www.skat.dk and then in the upper left hand scroll bar pick the car-import section. EDIT: If you import a car from abroad and want to put Danish license plates on it, it will have to be valued and go through a check. This value will then be used for the taxes and fees you will have to pay to the Danish tax department. As a rule of thumb, you can count on this amount being 56-60% of the sales value of an equivalent Danish car.
